A Primer for Evangelism: The SEEDS Framework (Part 4)
Welcome back to Centre Church’s Evangelism Primer series!
We’ve been exploring what we’ve called the SEEDS framework for evangelism:
- Study your cultural context
- Embrace your broader community
- Extend Christlike love
- Depend on the Holy Spirit
- Share your faith (The outcome of the previous four)
In this post, we’ll explore why the fourth and final step that helps us to share our faith - depending on the Holy Spirit. We’ll keep this post as brief and to-the-point as possible.
How the Holy Spirit Works in Evangelism
- The Holy Spirit Prepares Hearts – Before we even speak, the Holy Spirit is already at work, softening hearts and drawing people toward God (John 16:8-11).
- The Holy Spirit Gives Us the Right Words – Jesus promised in Luke 12:12, “The Holy Spirit will teach you at that very hour what must be said.” Trust that He will guide your conversations.
- The Holy Spirit Gives Boldness – In Acts 4:31, the disciples, filled with the Holy Spirit, spoke God’s word with boldness. Fear often holds us back, but the Spirit empowers us to step out in faith.
- The Holy Spirit Produces Fruit – When we walk in the Spirit, our lives display love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23), which make the gospel more compelling.
Practical Ways to Depend on the Holy Spirit in Evangelism
- Pray Before Every Interaction – Ask the Holy Spirit to lead your words and actions before engaging with others.
- Listen to His Promptings – Pay attention to the Spirit’s nudges, whether it’s the urge to talk to someone, offer encouragement, or simply be present.
- Trust in His Power, Not Your Abilities – You don’t need to have all the answers. Rely on the Spirit’s wisdom rather than your own intellect.
- Step Out in Faith – The Spirit often leads us beyond our comfort zones. Trust Him, even when it feels uncomfortable or risky.
- Pray for Those You Encounter – The Spirit continues working even after your conversations end. Pray for those you interact with, that their hearts will be open to the gospel.
Biblical Examples of Spirit-Led Evangelism
- Philip and the Ethiopian Official (Acts 8:26-40) – The Holy Spirit led Philip to a man searching for truth. Philip responded in obedience, and the man was baptized.
- Peter and Cornelius (Acts 10) – The Holy Spirit orchestrated an encounter between Peter and a Gentile named Cornelius, leading to salvation for him and his household.
- Paul’s Missionary Journeys (Acts 13-28) – Paul’s entire ministry was guided by the Spirit, who directed him where to go, whom to speak with, and even when to change course.
This Week’s Challenge
- This week, take a step of faith and invite the Holy Spirit to guide your interactions. Here’s how:
- Begin each day with a prayer for guidance and opportunities to share your faith.
- Pay attention to moments when you feel led to speak, listen, or serve.
- Trust that the Spirit will provide courage and wisdom when the opportunity arises.
- Journal any experiences where you sensed the Holy Spirit leading you.
